International Women's Day takes place on March 8, 2022. This year's theme for #BreakTheBias is We all have biases--it's an inherent part of human beings. Our collective biases may manifest in the culture and systems that foster gender disparities. Rachel Thomas, cofounder and CEO of OptionB.Org and LeanIn.Org, says that gender bias and gender stereotypes are so well-established in our society that everyone of all genders fall into the gender pitfalls. "For instance we are more likely to undervalue women’s performance and are more likely to question women’s competence--even in their fields of expertise. Research on feedback in reviews of performance shows that women are more likely to be criticised for their personal appearance when compared to males. If you put all of this together it is clear that women are more likely not to get the first crucial promotion up into manager and vice versa, which means that at all levels, there are less women promoted. Even with the improvements we've seen over the last couple years around women's representation in the leadership ranks, only one of four C-suite executives is a woman and just one out of 25 C-suite managers is a woman of color."
