 Peninnah was her rival who was a cruel and humiliating Hannah due to the fact that Peninnah was her childless. Peninnah was her adversary, and would scold and humiliate Hannah each year. Hannah would refuse to take food if Peninnah was visiting the LORD's house. Elkanah, her husband, would often beg Hannah why she was crying. Why aren't you eating? Why do you seem so sad? Hannah stood up one day after having finished her meal at the house of God in Shiloh. She was very sad, and she cried bitterly while praying for the LORD. Eli, the priest, was at the door. Hannah made a solemn promise: "Almighty LORD, look at me, your servant! See my trouble and remember me! Do not forget me! Hannah continued to pray to the LORD for a few minutes, and Eli was sitting quietly, watching her lips. She was silently praying, her lips moved, however, she didn't make any noise. Eli believed she was drunk.
