 The Promise is set in the Ottoman Empire's final days. It follows a love triangle of Michael, a brilliant medical student and Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), an American journalist who is based in Paris. When he travels to Constantinople to study and encounters Armenian Ana (Charlotte Le Bon) and falls in love with her although she dates the American photographer Chris (Christian Bale), sent to Turkey to document the first genocide of the 20th century, when the Turks exterminated the Armenian minority. A love triangle unfolds amid the horrors of war.I have chosen to watch this film due to the fact that I am a history buff and partly due to the strong leading actors. But it was immediately apparent that this movie vehicle was not even remotely worthy of their acting abilities. It was often painful to observe the struggles they encountered in bringing authenticity and conviction to their characters. It's difficult to emotionally connect with characters that don't seem real.
