Bilbo Baggins is the main and the title character in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. He also serves as a supporting character for The Lord of the Rings and is the fictional narrator in several of Tolkien's Middle-earth writings. Gandalf picks the Hobbit to assist Thorin and his group of Dwarves in reclaiming their home of ancestral origin and the treasure that was stolen by the dragon Smaug. Bilbo starts out as The Hobbit timid and comfort-loving as he becomes a helpful and resourceful part of the quest.Bilbo's way of life in the Shire that is defined by things like the presence of tobacco as well as a post office, is reminiscent of the English middle class during the Victorian to Edwardian period. This is not in line with the much older world of Dwarves and Elves. Tolkien seems to have created Bilbo on the designer William Morris's adventures in Iceland; Morris liked his home comforts, but grew through his adventurous journeying. Bilbo's journey is described as a pilgrimage of grace in which Bilbo gains wisdom and virility and also a mental journey towards wholeness.
