Bettany

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE, FSA (born May 27, 1967) is an English historian writer, broadcaster and author, who specializes in the study of classical history. Her published books focus on mythology and classical antiquity as well as the history of Istanbul. She actively promotes the teaching of classical studies in UK public schools. Hughes was awarded an OBE in the year 2019. In 2010, she spoke at the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika - The Things of Love" and in 2011, she delivered a speech at the Royal Television Society's Huw Wilson Memorial Lecture. She claimed that the history of television is expanding and enjoying a golden era. Hughes was chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011 which was the only UK annual award for stories written entirely by women. Hughes is patron of The Iris Project which promotes the teaching of Latin and Greek in UK public schools. She is an honorary patron for Classics For All, a national campaign to get classical languages and ancient civilisations back into state schools. She serves as an advisor to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation which seeks to foster large-scale collaborative projects that bridge East and West
