Bettany

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE FSA was born on May 27, 1967. She is an English historian and author who specializes in classical history. Her published books include mythology and classical antiquity, and the history of Istanbul. She is active in promoting the study of classics in UK state schools. Hughes was awarded an OBE in 2019. In 2010, she spoke at the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika - The Things of Love" and in 2011, she spoke at the Royal Television Society's Huw Wilson Memorial Lecture. She said that the history of television is growing and is enjoying a new golden era. In 2011, she was chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction, the UK's only annual literary award that recognizes fiction that is written by women. Hughes is a patron of The Iris Project, a charity which promotes the study of Latin and Greek in UK state schools. Classics For All is her official patron. The goal of this campaign is to restore classical languages and ancient civilisations to public schools. She is an advisor for the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation which seeks to encourage large-scale collaboration between East and West
